More Walter White!

Yes, Breaking Bad has ended its run and Better Call Saul is gearing up to explore the transformation of James "Jimmy" Morgan McGill from young, possibly-idealistic lawyer to the criminal criminal lawyer Saul Goodman - you ARE making plans to watch that, aren't you?  But during last Sunday's Super Bowl, Walter White re-emerged.  Sorta.

And then a friend sent me this remix, which I've barely been able to stop playing.  Enjoy, but be warned - it's not entirely safe for work (or to be played around small children, but it's Breaking Bad, so you knew that, right?).

Better Call Saul is getting some extremely good buzz - click here to see what I mean - and watch the trailer. This could be a show worth watching!

. . . and it's so big it needs two nights for the premiere! Plan to tune in Sunday, Feb. 8 and Monday, Feb. 9 at 10:00 Eastern!

Walter White Not-Wednesday

I know, this has become the spot for "Third Age Thursday," a weekly post devoted to Babylon 5 and particularly the ongoing construction of Dreams Given Form, which is the current project Ensley F. Guffey and I are working on for ECW. Publication is expected sometime in 2016 and Dreams Given Form will examine all aspects of the Babylon 5 universe, not limiting itself to the five seasons that were broadcast.

But it's my blog and this week, I'm bursting with news about our first project for ECW, Wanna Cook? The Complete, Unofficial Companion to Breaking Bad which was published this spring and would make a truly excellent gift for the Breaking Bad fan in your life.

Breaking Bad had appeal that transcended the borders of the United States - early on, ECW struck a publishing deal with Myrmidon Books in the United Kingdom (Wanna Cook? was Myrmidon's first non-fiction book, a fact of which we're both quite proud) and that was followed by an arrangement with German publisher Schwarzkopf & Schwarzkopf to have the book translated into a German edition (which, due to different copyright laws in Europe, is also titled Breaking Bad, which is very, very cool). By the way, the link I included here has been translated into English, but yes - it's a German translation of the original book.

Then Brazil got in on the Breaking Bad act. That edition, which will be published in Portuguese by LeYa, is not available yet, and Ensley and I plan to do some (English language) interviews and publicity to promote the book in that great country.

And we thought that was just fantastic - an embarrassment of editions, actually. (Really - we squee'd every time ECW gave us the news of another foreign edition. Seriously. We did.)

But then, almost as a holiday gift, we received the news that Epsilon, a Turkish press, wants to translate and publish Wanna Cook? into Turkish. Turkish!

That makes five publishers (including ECW, of course, about whom praises cannot be sung highly enough!) on four continents and three foreign language editions. We're a pair of turtledove authors, so hand us a partridge in a pear tree and we're nearly half a Christmas carol!

So really - don't you want to buy a couple of copies of this incredible book?  You know you do! Amazon has it in stock and you can even get free shipping if you have Prime!

Walter White Wednesday 116

As I wind down "Walter White Wednesday" as a regular feature here (don't worry; like Walt, it'll never truly go away), I'm trying to go out with a bang, so let me remind you again that Ensley F. Guffey and I are scheduled to do another signing down at the South Carolina coast - come see us at the North Myrtle Beach Books-A-Million on Saturday, September 13 beginning at 2 pm! Come out and say "hey," share a few Funyuns with us, trade Breaking Bad tales - heck, there may even be a taste of the blue for you if you know the lyrics to Badfinger's "Baby Blue"! Tell your friends and spread the word!

Also, don't forget that the "binge broadcast" is still going on every Sunday night on AMC - tune in beginning at 5 pm. For the hardcore fan, AMC has thoughtfully provided companion material!

Still can't get enough? Then you need tickets to the first Breaking Bad Fest which is being held in (where else?) Albuquerque, Duke City, ABQ itself! Click here for details - the guest list keeps growing!

And just to help you with the "Baby Blue" challenge . . .

Walter White Wednesday 115

Since Breaking Bad concluded its run with the incredible "Felina" last September, Monday night's broadcast of the Primetime Emmy Awards was the show's final chance to take home some of the golden girls. Typically, Breaking Bad did not disappoint. Having already won a Creative Arts Emmy Award for outstanding editing for "Felina" (yay for Skip MacDonald, who also worked on Buffy back in the day), Breaking Bad took home Emmy Awards for Best Drama Series (the second in a row), Best Lead Actor in a Drama (Bryan Cranston, winning his fifth!), Best Supporting Actress in a Drama (Anna Gunn, taking home her second in a row), Best Supporting Actor in a Drama (Aaron Paul, taking home his third), and Outstanding Writing (Moira Walley-Beckett for the amazing "Ozymandias"). Vince Gilligan did not receive the Best Directing award, which I think is a shame - do they think "Felina" directed itself? Still, it's unseemly to complain with those results. (And yes, Walt, we know. You won. Really, you did.)

AMC continues the "binge broadcast" every Sunday night beginning at 5 pm and going until 1 am - check that out if you can handle that much depravity in an evening! AMC has thoughtfully provided companion material for binge watchers!

Speaking of companion material, Ensley F. Guffey and I are scheduled to do another signing down at the South Carolina coast - come see us at the North Myrtle Beach Books-A-Million on Saturday, September 13 beginning at 2 pm! We'd love to see you, talk Breaking Bad and even give you a taste of the blue! Tell your friends and spread the word!

And, since Ensley already posted the hysterical "pawn shop" skit with Cranston and Paul (click here for that post), let's take a moment to remember how things could have ended . . .

Walter White Wednesday 114

Can they do it again this year?
The Emmy Awards are coming soon! For the first time in nearly 40 years, the Emmys are being broadcast on a Monday night, so make your plans for Monday, August 25 and tune in to NBC to find out if Breaking Bad has a big night - remember, the show is nominated for a whopping 16 of the golden girls!

Ensley and I have been busy talking up Breaking Bad and having a whale of a good time doing it. This past Saturday, we were part of Barnes & Noble's "Get Pop-Cultured" event and we had a wonderful time at the Winston-Salem, NC location talking to fans and swapping stories. Ensley wrote up the event over on his blog and he also talked about our guest spot on CultureSmash as well as our initial "The Ten Percent" column on the BiffBamPop.com site.

We're also gearing up to start drafting Dreams Given Form, our exciting new project for ECW that will have us delving into All Things Babylon 5 for the next year-plus.

Therefore, I think you'll understand if Walter White Wednesday starts to wind down a bit. Oh, I'll still post about Breaking Bad - you can count on that! But I'm going to take a week off, then write about the Emmy results, and then it may be time to let Walter White rest in peace, if he can.

But we've still got Saul!  Have you seen the teaser?  Although Better Call Saul won't air until February of 2015, already I'm getting excited!  How'd Jimmy McGill turn into Saul Goodman? Oh, there's a story to be told!

See you after the Emmys!

Walter White Wednesday 113

Although its final episode aired nearly a year ago, Breaking Bad continues to inspire fans. I've written here before about fan activities, ranging from nail art, to tattoos, to entire conventions, so let's add this to the mix - street art! Click the link to see gorgeous murals and paintings found around the globe - all inspired by Breaking Bad!!

If you're a fan and you're in the Triad area of North Carolina, come on out to see us at the Winston-Salem Barnes & Noble this weekend! We'll be appearing on Saturday beginning at 3 pm to talk Breaking Bad, sign copies of Wanna Cook? (which, c'mon, really is the must-have for AMC's binge-watching party that begins on Sunday, August 10 at 5 pm), and even hand out samples of the blue! Details can be found here!

Also, while Ensley has discussed this over on his blog in the most recent "Meth Monday," it bears repeating. We're broadening the discussion net for Breaking Bad with two upcoming events.

First, we'll be guests (hopefully of the honored variety) tonight at 8 pm on the CultureSmash webcast where we'll talk about Breaking Bad, writing Wanna Cook? and whatever else the fine CultureSmash folks allow us to yammer on about before they cut our mikes. The episode will be available live and also archived on the CultureSmash website as well, so please - check it out and let them know you're listening!

Also, we've been asked to write a regular column for BiffBamPop and our first one (about Breaking Bad, naturally!) goes live this Thursday, August 7. Our column is called "The Ten Percent" (the name comes from science-fiction writer Theodore Sturgeon's observation that "90% of everything is crud") and will focus on that magnificent ten percent of film/television/comics/etc. that isn't crud. Please click on over there as well!

Walter White Wednesday 112

This past weekend, Ensley and I appeared at a book signing for Wanna Cook? at a nearby Books-A-Million. It was a fun event, and they're talking about having us back around the holiday season, although I'm slightly conflicted about that - Wanna Cook? is a guide to Breaking Bad, which just doesn't much seem like a heartwarming holiday show for the whole family. But hey - different strokes, right?

By the way, Ensley wrote a fantastic post about the book signing and the people-watching that went with it over at his blog - click here to go there!

We'll be making another appearance in a couple of weeks in the Triad area of North Carolina - catch our act at the Winston-Salem location of Barnes & Noble on August 9 beginning at 3 pm as part of their "Get Pop Cultured" events. Details are in the link over on the left - come on out and say "hi!" to us!  We'd love to see you!

In other Breaking Bad related news, there are these two items for your consideration:

Bryan Cranston recently played President Lyndon B. Johnson on Broadway in the play All the Way, a role for which he received the Tony Award. The play also won Best Play and I hated that I couldn't get to NYC to see it. Never fear! A television version is being prepared for broadcast on HBO next year with Cranston reprising his role. He will also serve as an executive producer for the show, along with Steven Spielberg and two others. The playwright, Robert Schenkkan, will take charge of the adaptation.

Also, Disney is working on a live-action version of Kipling's The Jungle Book, which I'm also excited about. The cartoon version was always a favorite of mine. What's that have to do with Breaking Bad, you ask?  Good question. Let me just say this, and then you can check out this link.  Gus Fring.  Wolf.  Fine, go click the link and then marvel.

Walter White Wednesday 111

. . . so this is the post that goes to a hundred and eleven!  Spinal Tap would be so proud!

This is a quick post this week and I promise to get back to the weekend movie postings as well. Occasionally, life is overtaken by events and schedules have to be readjusted.

First off, Wanna Cook? continues to generate interest and buzz, for which Ensley and I are both grateful. We'll be making two North Carolina appearances in the near future and would love to see you at one or both and hey - tell your friends, would you? AMC is kicking off their "how much dark can you take?" marathon of Breaking Bad beginning on August 10 with episodes airing in a block on Sundays from 5 pm to 1 am (so the entire run finishes on October 5th) and Wanna Cook? should be considered an indispensable part of the binge-watching experience, sort of like literary Funyons. So come out to see us - and maybe even snag a sample of the blue! - at the Gastonia location of Books-A-Million this Saturday (July 26) beginning at 2 pm or, for you Triad-based folks, come see us at the Winston-Salem Barnes & Noble just under the binge-watching wire on August 9 beginning at 3 pm. Details and links are on the left! Buy a copy for yourself or for a friend - we'll happily sign it and discuss your thoughts on Walter White and Company.

In other related news, we're learning more about Better Call Saul. AMC is showing tremendous faith in the scheduled for 2015 show by already ordering a second 13-episode season. A few spoilers and casting notes can be found here, if you're interested.

Breaking Bad in 2014?
This post is a day early for the 2014 Emmy nominations, which will be announced tomorrow (July 10). One reason Breaking Bad's final season was split into two parts was to guarantee that the show would be eligible for the Emmy Awards for work produced in both the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 seasons.  We'll see if that's a strategy that pays off in wins (surely in nominations!) As the Los Angeles Times points out here, there's an awful lot of superior TV out there right now and it's possible that voters will go for newer shows over Breaking Bad which broadcast its final episode in September of 2013.

Ensley has posted on his blog about our recent signing at Beers Books in Sacramento and we're ironing out the final details of a live interview with the fine folks of CultureSmash who reviewed Wanna Cook? - check back for the final arrangements shortly!

Also, at the end of July, we'll be appearing close to home to talk Breaking Bad and sign copies of Wanna Cook? for the discerning fan.  Look for both of us (and some of the blue!) at the Gastonia location of Books-A-Million on Saturday, July 26 beginning at 5 pm! That's at 3710 E. Franklin Blvd., if you need to find directions.  Wanna Cook? is the perfect companion for AMC's binge-broadcast of all five seasons of Breaking Bad which is scheduled to begin on August 10 and here's your chance to make sure you're ready, whether it'll be your first watch or your tenth re-watch!

Of course, Wanna Cook? remains available for purchase through the usual online suspects:

and here in Shelby, you can get your copy over at Got Books!

The Not-Quite-Walter-White-Wednesday Post

Before I get to the Breaking Bad portion of this week's post, I have something to announce.  Ensley and I have been keeping this quiet until the contract was signed, thus making things official and he broke the news last night as soon as the ink was dry, so I didn't want to wait any longer!  We can happily announce that ECW Press, who first brought you the witty and good-looking research-and-writing team of Guffey und Koontz (hey, it's my blog and that's my story), has agreed to publish another book from us!  Dreams Given Form: The Unofficial Companion to the Babylon 5 Universe will be a complete guide to the complex universe created by J. Michael Straczynski - the five seasons and five movies of the original series, Crusade, Legends of the Rangers, Babylon 5: The Lost Tales, the canonical novels, short stories, and comic books will all be discussed, along with a few extra special surprises (we hope!). Dreams Given Form is slated for a fall 2016 publication date, which puts it slap in the middle of Babylon 5's 20th anniversary celebrations. In the next few months, this blog will gradually switch its focus over to the new project (Third Age Thursday??), although Breaking Bad news will still be discussed from time to time.

<*>

And Breaking Bad continues to make headlines.  A TiVo study recently found it was the "most binge watched" show (meaning 3 or more episodes in a day), edging out House of Cards and Game of Thrones. When this was discussed on the Today show, Al Roker grumpily spoiled the ending regarding Walter White's fate, thereby sparking a heated discussion on when spoiler alerts cease to be the polite thing to do.  (When it comes to Breaking Bad, I say spoiler alerts are still a good idea, since it is a show that so very many people are just now discovering. On the other hand, when Whedon's version of Much Ado about Nothing came out last year, I felt it was unnecessary to alert "here be spoilers" since the play was 400+ years old!!)

BuzzFeed hopped on the Breaking Bad bandwagon again with an installment called "34 Things You Probably Didn't Know about Breaking Bad."  Interesting stuff on that list and you knew many of them if you had your trusty copy of Wanna Cook? by your side, although one of them (#32) gets debunked in the book as well.

Breaking Bad continues to live on beyond the small screen - Bryan Cranston is writing a memoir for publishing house Scribner about his time on the show and the spin-off Better Call Saul will be airing in 2015.  (It's been pushed back from its original November air date, but the network has shown confidence in the show by ordering 13 episodes to be produced.) Better Call Saul is going to feature a "flexible" timeframe, so we'll have the chance to see Saul Goodman pre-Breaking Bad, during the show's events, and also after the events of "Felina."  I, for one, am looking forward to seeing him as the manager of an Omaha Cinnabon, but maybe I'm alone on that.

Of Slayages and Squirrels

I apologize for missing "Walter White Wednesday" this week, but it was unavoidable. Ensley and I had just returned from the Sixth Biennial Slayage Conference on the Whedonverses and were dealing with jet-lag. I'm pretty sure that if I'd tried to post on Wednesday, the result would have looked like this:

"Welcome to Walueoriep jsdoibfjkl;adk fl;sdkflzzzzzzz."

And really - who wants that?  We did have a successful book signing at Beers Books in Sacramento, due in large part to supportive Slayage attendees who came out to celebrate with us (and maybe to score a little of the blue). The picture at the top of the post is from the signing - look at that enticing bowl of candy!

Many others will post about Slayage - and there will be an official report on the various papers, presentations and roundtables put out by official Whedon Studies Association ("WSA") reporters soon - so I'm taking a different tack here. Rather than attempting to summarize the various papers I was able to hear (I missed a fair number, since three sessions run concurrently and I have yet to master the use of time-traveling technology), let me explain why the WSA matters.

There are any number of professional organizations - groups devoted to particular philosophers, authors, theorists, professions, and so on. The WSA is devoted to the academic study of Joss Whedon, a prospect that has caused more than one media professional to say, "Huh-what?" I'm not here to re-plow that ground - Whedon's work often shows depth and nuance that an academic would eagerly pounce on, and the fact that humor is so tightly interwoven just makes the exploration that much - well, cooler. We're fans of the work (we spend too much time here to hate the stuff, although I went to a fantastic session defending "hated characters" at this latest gathering), which means we quote, and quip, and wear clever T-shirts. But at the core, Slayage is about scholarship. How does Dollhouse tackle themes of consent and privilege? How can theories of leadership and military tactics be applied to The Avengers? How does the law firm of Wolfram & Hart reflect actual legal principles of a "vigorous defense"? Oh, we do go on.

But even that's not the real point of this.

Perhaps you've noticed:  higher education is a mess right now. Questions of student loans, bloated administrative costs, low morale, frozen pay, a dangerously-expanding bubble of adjunct workloads, and the application of so-called "business models" to education dominate the headlines.  In short, it's not a good time to ask for funding to go to a conference devoted to a man best known for creating a show with the silly-sounding title Buffy the Vampire Slayer, no matter how elevated the work and discussion might be. But go we do, often on our own dime. And that matters.

Yes, we make valuable contacts. Publishing contacts, professional contacts, and personal contacts - we make 'em all at Slayage. We present our work - often nervously; these people are smart! - and we refine it as a result of questions and comments we receive. In such ways, scholarship - which ought to matter as much as the football field house - advances, bringing us along with it. We see the world a hair differently. We understand each other a touch better. We aren't so scared of someone who doesn't look exactly like us.

We become better.

And that's what it's about. Now, the WSA won't work that way for everyone; that's why there are all those other societies. But for me, the WSA provides a unique opportunity to learn. Many teacher-types don't want to do that - they aren't secure enough to admit there are things they don't know about, so they remain tightly in their own box of expertise. Whedonians not only cheerfully admit that they don't know things; they revel in the idea that there's so much more out there to learn and they expect you to share. I've attended sessions in areas that are so far afield from my own areas of expertise that it would make my knees quake to consider going to a presentation in those areas if I didn't have the common thread of Whedon to wrap tightly around me. Seriously - I know very little about musicology or the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze and I attended - and enjoyed - sessions centering on both.

The "bottom line" folks would ask - "Well, how are you going to use that in class?"

My answer:  I don't know. Yet. But I know I'm a better instructor for going outside what I already know.

And Slayage is also so much fun! Spending time with intelligent, lively people who are reveling in their passions usually is. Add to that the campus squirrels, who were entirely too tame, and you have the makings of a meme. So we did.  (Tumblr. The. Best.)

Passion.  Maybe Angel said it best:  "Passion is the source of our finest moments; the joy of love, the clarity of hatred, and the ecstasy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we could live without passion, maybe we'd know some kind of peace. But we would be hollow. Empty rooms, shuttered and dank . . . without passion, we'd be truly dead."

So there's Slayage and during that time, we see each other.  We squeal, and we hug tightly, and we cement that community, knowing that it needs to carry us through another Slay-age (which has been determined to be four days followed by two years). And carry us it does. Think of it this way - since I started attending with the second Slayage in 2006, I've published my first book; gotten involved in fan communities that use Whedon's words as inspiration to raise awareness and cashy money for good causes (I even helped design a T-shirt to help with one I felt especially strongly about); met and married my husband; co-wrote a book with him; and built relationships with people that I may not see all that often, but consider family nevertheless.

I can't put a dollar amount on it, but I know it's worth something better than cash.

Walter White Wednesday 107

Super quick this week - I'm traveling and am out in sunny California getting ready to attend the 6th Biennial Slayage Conference on the Whedonverses, which promises to be a BLAST!  That'll keep me occupied and (mostly) out of trouble through Sunday, but then on Monday afternoon, Ensley and I will be making an appearance at Beers Books to talk Breaking Bad and sign copies of Wanna Cook? so please - if you're in the area or know Breaking Bad fans who are, let them know we'll be over at Beers from 3 to 6 Monday afternoon!

Details can be found here!

We're even bringing the blue, which was surprisingly easy to get through security.  Hmmm.

Walter White Wednesday 106

Also known as the one in which the "one who knocks" becomes the "one with the Tony Award"! Yes, on Sunday, Bryan Cranston took home the Tony for Best Leading Actor in a play for his role as President Lyndon Baines Johnson in All the Way, which also won the Tony for Best Play.  And yes, Cranston compared acting on Broadway to blue meth, so you could say Walter White is still on his mind.

Next week, Ensley and I will be out in California attending and presenting at the 6th Biennial Slayage Conference on the Whedonverses. We're looking forward to seeing "conference friends" who we generally only get to brush shoulders with once every two years (a "slay age" has been determined to be three days followed by two years, incidentally) and the lineup for this conference looks quite impressive!  Many of the contributors to the highly-anticipated collection Reading Joss Whedon will be there - and that's a recently-released book serious Whedon scholars will want!  (You might even recognize a name or two . . .)

While we're out in Sacramento, we'll be having a signing for Wanna Cook? over at Sacramento's comprehensive independent bookstore Beers Books, so if you're in the area (or know Breaking Bad fans who might be!), spread the word and come on down!  It's scheduled for 3:00 - 6:00 pm on Monday, June 23! I'll put up a quick reminder - probably over on Twitter - but the Slayage conference is a runrunrun event, so no "Walter White Wednesday" next week, although I'll be sure to check in again before we leave for sunny Sacramento!

Walter White Wednesday 105

Some fun odds and ends this week.  To start with, a very nice review from the United Kingdom review site, The Bookbag for Wanna Cook.  They agree that Wanna Cook? is a must for the Breaking Bad fan.  The book would go nicely with your new, complete Breaking Bad DVD/Blu-Ray set.  (Yes, other sets have come out before - this is the latest version.)

Second - just a favorite clip of mine.  Skinny Pete was more than just a burnout and it's nice that got a nod during the series.  It gives him a touch more depth, doesn't it?

Last - some enterprising fan has animated Badger's Star Trek script.  Enjoy the pie eating contest and beware slippery hands on the transporter controls!!

Walter White Wednesday 104

I've been enjoying watching Breaking Bad mashups and parodies lately - this is a show that inspired any number of highly creative fans to spread their wings.  (Remember "narvinek's" amazing "Ecstasy of Gold" creation?  Click here if you need a reminder.)  Ensley posted a great one over on his site this week - the attention that was paid to the sets just had me tickled in that one! During the process of writing Wanna Cook? it seemed that I never had time to explore this aspect of fandom, so I'm getting a real kick out of these.

Breaking Bad re-imagined as a sitcom, circa 1995.  That wacky White family!!

And Breaking Bad as a romantic comedy.  After all, weren't they really meant to be together, despite it all?

In Wanna Cook? news, the book continues to garner positive critical attention.  The UK blogger Book Addict Shaun liked it quite a bit, for instance.  And did I mention that we're being translated into Portuguese?  Yep.  There's enough interest in this incredible show that Brasil wanted its own version!  We're excited beyond belief - that makes three languages (English, German, Portuguese) on three continents (North America, Europe, South America)!  Maybe it's not an empire we're building, but it's a very nice community!

So - if you read the book and liked it, tell Amazon or Goodreads or post on your own blog - then send us the link!  Hope to hear from you soon!

Walter White Wednesday 101

Whew! With the excitement of the official book launch now behind us, it's time to concentrate on a few other things as Ensley and I both wind down our semesters. For me, it's gradegradegrade and he's putting the finishing touches on consolidating the "mountain getaway" graduate school apartment into our house. It'll take us a few more days to figure out where everything goes (to Goodwill in the case of a few doubles of things - you just don't need more shower caddies than you have bathrooms!) and we hope to then spend a few days just being together after four years of a commuter marriage.  He also walks across the stage in his snazzy graduate school robe (you know, the one with the funny sleeves) and I expect to beam with pride.

Ensley's "Meth Monday" post this week detailed two things I want to emphasize - the first is Vince Gilligan's appearance at the Sydney Writers' Festival.  Turns out that Australians are the biggest pirates of Breaking Bad, which isn't too surprising when you consider that the country basically started as a penal colony.  And just how cool are those garbage trucks?

The second piece of news has to do with the German translation of Wanna Cook?  Seems that European ideas of "fair use in copyright" are considerably different from our approach in the good ol' U.S. of A. so we get this as a cover (and title!) -

That's right - Guffey und Koontz!
I squeed out loud - I'll admit it.  Seriously.  That cover is fantastic!!

Here in the US, Wanna Cook? continues to get good press. I've mentioned a few in earlier posts, but any review that says "There are a lot of books out there that say they are the unofficial companion guides to whatever television series, but let me say up front, Ensley F. Guffey and K. Dale Koontz have found the perfect formula.  Wanna Cook? is the primer for how those books should be written" is going to get a mention from me!  Go read the full review over on the BiffBamPop Website.

We also have several five-star reviews on Amazon.  So please - if you've read the book and liked it, take a few minutes to go on a site like Amazon, Goodreads, or your own blog and tell the world - then tell us!

In a week or so, we'll start putting our energies to setting up some appearances and book-signings. Drop us a line - here in the comments, over on Facebook, or on Twitter (@KDaleKoontz or @EnsleyFGuffey) - if you're interested in seeing us and maybe scoring a little of the blue!  Remember - the first one's free!

Walter White Wednesday 100!

Ready for signing!
It's been a long time coming, but finally I can announce that Wanna Cook? The Complete, Unofficial Companion to Breaking Bad has been successfully launched! Ensley wrote about the launch over on his blog, but I'd like to say a few things here as well. First off, THANK YOU! to everyone who supported this event! That includes a bevy of local businesses here in our hometown who deserve a public shout-out:

  • Dragonfly Wine Market, who provided the wine for the event (no Schraderbrau, but you can't have everything, can you? Wink!)
  • Holly's Flowers, who provided us with a delicate (and deadly!) bouquet of lily-of-the-valley for the signing table
  • Joe's Place, who offered customers who came in with a signed copy a free dessert the night of the signing
  • Lily Bean's Micro-Roasted Coffee, who provided coffee and "Blue Sky" mini cupcakes for the launch and also offered the "Lydia Special" the day of the launch
  • Newt's Pub Burgers, who offered the "Heisenburger" and "Jesse's Blue Chips" the day of the launch, along with the special Crystal Blue Shake
  • Ni Fen Bistro, who provided awesome food for the launch, as well as offering customers who came in with a signed copy of the book a free order of fantastic potstickers
  • Pleasant City Wood Fired Grille, who offered customers who came in with a signed copy of the book a 10% discount on their order that night
  • . . . and of course, an extra round of applause for Fireside Books & Gifts, who hosted the event!
Really, I don't have the words (funny, being a writer and all) to explain how wonderful the night was.  Two years of extremely hard work - don't let anyone tell you that writing isn't work - came together in a marvelous evening that was marked by an outpouring of love, support, and excitement over Breaking Bad.
Great crowd!
Checking the purity!
Longtime fan!
How's the book doing, you ask?  Quite well - this morning, Wanna Cook? was ranked at #8 in a sub-sub category on Amazon (okay, add another "sub" to that). Our publisher, ECW Press, seems quite happy with the initial reception and our UK publisher (Myrmidon) is posting pictures from the launch on their Twitter feed. We're getting nice press locally, on book lovers blogs, and on review sites.  So really - buy a copy or three!

Still not sure what makes Breaking Bad so special? I think this tribute by Alexandre Gasulla sums it up beautifully . . .

And an extra-large congratulations! to Bryan Cranston on his Tony nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal of LBJ in All the Way.  The play also was nominated for Best Play - quite an achievement!

Lafayette Street in Shelby, NC and we'll start at 5pm, but there's plenty else going on in Shelby that day.  Ensley's posting information about the launch, too - but remember, April 26th is also the start of the two-day Foothills Merry Go Round Festival and the Foothills Farmers Market will be taking place on the square that morning with Arts on the Square and the Broad River European Classic going on through the afternoon!  You can take a tram ride up to the gorgeous restored carrousel in the Shelby City Park (you might want to go back there after you have dinner for the fireworks at 9 pm) before you come on by Fireside at 5pm!  Meet the authors (we're simply delightful!), browse Linda's fine store, buy the book!!, and help yourselves to some yummy snackerels and wine (provided by Ni Fen Bistro and Dragonfly Wine Market) while we sign it.  Then go visit one of the Shelby businesses that are helping us promote this fabulous Breaking Bad companion book!  Deals abound and we'll have a few more to report to you before the actual event, but that signed book is worth:

  • A free order of potstickers with your meal at Ni Fen Bistro! (Remember, these are award-winning dumplings - they are delicious!!)
  • 10% off your dinner order at Pleasant City Wood Fired Grille
  • Free house dessert with your meal at Joe's Place
  • You could also go visit Newt's Pub Burgers for the "Heisenburger" and get a side of Jesse's Blue (Nacho) Chips
  • Or, if you prefer sweet to savory, go to Lily Bean's Micro-Roasted Coffee for the "Lydia Special" which is a Blue Magic cupcake and a freshly-brewed chamomile tea (but careful about adding Stevia!)

Remember these deals are only good on Saturday, April 26 - so come on out!

We're also excited to continue to post and link pictures of Wanna Cook? that have come from fans - like the one at the top of this post from a bookstore in Akron, Ohio!  Wanna Cook? is all over the place!  Send us your picture, or tweet it to the world and let us know about it by including us (@KDaleKoontz and @EnsleyFGuffey) in the tweet!  Remember to use the hashtags #wannacook and #breakingbad while you're at it!

The book continues to get some very nice publicity, too - this is what the April 15 edition of Library Journal had to say:

For five seasons, the AMC television series Breaking Bad, which was created and produced by Vince Gilligan, garnered both critical acclaim and widespread audience appeal. Historian Guffey and pop culture writer Koontz (Faith and Choice in the Works of Joss Whedon) offer an insightful companion text to the Emmy Award–winning drama, which aired from 2008 to 2013. Besides introductory and concluding essays analyzing the production and its characters, the authors provide an episode-by-episode recap of the series. Titles, air dates, and the director of each episode are included. Fun facts, character analyses, film and production notes, and dialog highlights are found in each chapter under the headings “Lab Notes” and “Special Ingredients,” a clever reference to the show’s plotline about a chemistry teacher who “breaks bad” and turns to a life of crime as a methamphetamine producer and dealer after being diagnosed with cancer. VERDICT This “unofficial” companion book is essential for fans of Breaking Bad and for those who want to learn more about what some have called the “greatest television show.”—Donna Marie Smith, Palm Beach Cty. Lib. Syst., FL

See you Saturday!!

Walter White Wednesday 98

It's amazing how Wanna Cook? is picking up steam!  Ensley has details over at his blog and let me remind you as well - the official book launch is Saturday, April 26 at Fireside Books & Gifts in Shelby (212 S. Lafayette Street) at 5pm, and we couldn't have asked for a better day!  It's as if all of Shelby is celebrating with us!!

April 26th is also the start of the two-day Foothills Merry Go Round Festival in Shelby, along with the Foothills Farmers Market that morning and Arts on the Square and the Broad River European Classic going on through the afternoon!  So come on out, eat, wander, take a tram ride up to the restored carrousel in the Shelby City Park and then come on by Fireside at 5pm!  Meet the authors, browse Linda's fine store, buy the book!!, and help yourselves to some yummy snackerels while we sign it.  Then go visit one of the Shelby businesses that are helping us promote this fabulous Breaking Bad companion book!  Deals abound and we'll have a few more to report to you before the actual event, but that signed book is worth:

Wanna Cook? is beginning to get some buzz from those who love both books and Breaking Bad - check out this review on the book blog curledup.com:
Every nuance is pulled apart and analyzed for its meaning.

Then the book goes two levels deeper for all of the under-surface connections. Very revealing and thought-provoking. The book also describes the key signature characteristics of the series. The camera angles, the non-linear story lines, the "cold" opens that get put together piece by piece in a complex puzzle that ultimately tells the arc of the story.
At the end of every season/section, there is an essay on a key topic that adds to the understanding and at times realism that made Breaking Bad so compelling. Those essays just add more of the backstory to the overall understanding and appreciation for the show.
After reading the book, I know what I have to do--I have no choice. I have to go back and see every Breaking Bad episode again to dive deeper into the morass and put together the pieces that I missed first time around. Wanna Cook? makes you want to do that. Sort of like an addiction, don't you think?

The whole review can be accessed here.  And hey - if you've already read the book and liked it - tell us (and letting Amazon or Goodreads know would also be much appreciated!!) - leave us a comment on our blogs, or tweet the world using the hashtag #wannacook and include us (@KDaleKoontz and @EnsleyFGuffey) in the news!

Last - just to prove that Bryan Cranston is indeed awesome beyond the measure of mortal men, watch him help out Stefan Montana by asking a girl to the prom for him.  Stefan waited outside the stage door of Cranston's Broadway play All the Way and Cranston couldn't have been nicer when faced with such an unusual request.
